Incremental rotary encoder EltraEltra incremental encoder is a sensor that tracks the position and movement of a detail in space by using special pulses. In this type of sensors, before starting work it is necessary to set the initial position also known as zero-point.

Incremental encoder working principle

The incremental encoder uses two types of square waves as outputting signal, also called channel A and channel B.

In first type, rotary encoder signal provides information only about the speed of rotation of the detail, which is measured in the number of pulses in a determined unit of time.

In the second case, the channel provides data on the direction of rotation in accordance with a sequence created by two signals.

There is still a third type of signal, called the zero channel, also available and used as a reference point.

Structure of incremental rotary shaft encoder

By the principle of work, incremental encoders are divided into optical and magnetic.

In the first case, the reading of the pulses from the infrared LED goes through photodiodes or phototransistors. Between them, there is a special code rotary encoder wheel. The light projects the position of the marks on the disc onto the surface of the receivers. That device handles disc movement, changes and converts them into special code.

In magnetic shaft encoder, reading of detail position is performed by using a drive with a special magnet. Sensor detects the passage of magnetic poles and converts changes in the electric field into a digital code or signal.
