The Actuator Sensor Interface, commonly known as AS-Interface or ASi, is a decentralized network solution for integrating field devices into many automation systems.

A special feature of IFM AS-interface systems is the connection method. In a traditional environment, a system with many field devices often includes complex wiring and large masses of cable trees. This can be avoided with the ASi, thanks to a special two-wire cable capable of transmitting both supply voltage and data. This greatly reduces installation costs, materials and labor required.

ASi systems can be divided into three main types: compact, extended, and multi-master. Compact systems are stand-alone ASis that are not connected to any other bus. These systems can be configured in one of the following topologies: tree branch, star, and ring. The most commonly used topology is the branch tree because of the ability to add multiple branches at any cable connection point.

In an extensive system, the ASi bus is decoupled and integrated with higher-level buses. Several ASis can be connected to one bus. The advantage of this system is that it goes beyond the 500m limit of ASi connections. A multi-master system implies more than one master ASi. This system is useful for maximizing cable length as well as the number of connected devices.

ASi communication basically operates in a client/server (master/slave) manner. Each ASi system contains at least one ASi client (master). The client is responsible for: system initialization, identification of connected devices (servers or slaves), cycle time management, server error detection and transmission, and server parameterization. The server first decodes messages coming from the client, takes appropriate action, and provides feedback to the client.

Advantages of ASI:

  • The easiest I/O connection with AS-i perfectly complements all fieldbuses.
  • High-performance gateways, optionally with PLC function.
  • Graphic color display and built-in web server for easy setup and diagnostics.
  • Easy and fast setup.

What is the function of the IFM module?

AS-Interface is a simple and economical wiring system for the first level of industrial communication. The AS-Interface network consists of a control unit, the so-called master, signal processing modules, and their associated sensors and actuators. Safety components can be easily integrated into the AS-i network via AS-Interface Safety at Work.

Signals from standard units and safety components are transmitted via a common cable. The fault-tolerant AS-i PLC is certified for use in safety-related applications up to SIL3, PL e. AS-i security monitors are used to monitoring security components in AS-i systems. They keep track of the code sequences to be transmitted on the AS-i network.

In case of rejected messages or timeouts, the monitor ensures a safe state of the system. The Safe AS-i modules detect safety-related switching states of 1- or 2-gang emergency switches, position switches, or door contacts. With the safety input module, safety components without an integrated AS-i interface can be connected to the AS-i system.
