The AS-Interface replaces the traditional wired connection at the sensor/actuator level. AS-Interface has already established itself as a reliable and economical international standard for transmitting signals and power over a single cable. This open system is compatible with all popular industrial network systems.
Advantages:
- Reduce installation and connection costs with insulation piercing technology.
- No topology.
- Providing power and transmitting safe and non-safe signals over a single cable.
- Functional safety up to category PLe/SIL3.
- Advanced diagnostic function.
- Automatic addressing when replacing a device.
- Flexible system expansion options.
- Compatible with all industrial networks and PLCs.
Today we will try to examine in detail what IFM Safety monitors are. We will also turn our attention to what functions safety monitors perform.
What are IFM Safety Monitors?
IFM Safety monitors are the basic elements of distributed safety automation systems based on AS-Interface. Configuration of distributed safety automation systems is performed from a computer equipped with special software. The configuration parameters are downloaded to the safety relay.
For distributed safety automation systems, various operating modes can be set, covering the functions of the emergency power off, manual control functions performed simultaneously with two hands and the functions of stopping technological equipment of categories 0 or 1.
To make the best use of the AS-Interface diagnostic capabilities, the safety relays can be assigned their own network addresses.
Blocks are available in two versions:
- with one 2-channel output
- with two 2-channel outputs
What is the function of IFM Safety monitors?
The AS-Interface Safety Modules ensure secure data transmission on the AS-Interface network in accordance with the latest provisions of the Machinery Directive. This globally used safety system achieves the highest SIL3/PLe safety class, ensuring system safety without the use of a safety PLC.
All known safety devices can be directly connected to the AS-Interface segment via modules or as an integrated solution. The decentralized change of the AS-Interface security concept is simple.
Functions:
- Logical operation "OR". The logical operation “OR” allows the logical addition of up to 6 signals from the safety automation sensors.
- Logical operation "AND". The logical operation “AND” allows the formation of operation enable chains and can be integrated with the “OR” operation.
- Buffer. Used to temporarily store information used to perform diagnostic operations.
- Number of controlled slaves. The number of safety automation slaves controlled by one unit can be up to 48.
- Timers. The following functions can be supported using timers: turn-on delay, turn-off delay, the formation of impulses.
- Compatibility. Any configurations of distributed safety automation systems created for earlier versions of monitoring units can be supported by new versions of monitoring units.
IFM ASi safety monitors are most commonly used:
- For security monitoring of protective systems
- Applications: door control, multi-beam safety barriers, emergency stop, two-hand control
- Monitor up to 31 secure AS-i slaves
- Replacement for many standard safety relays
- Can be integrated into an AS-i network in any position
