Level sensors are devices that allow you to track the amount of a liquid or bulk substance by the level of its surface in a certain container. Level sensors can produce a discrete (on reaching a certain level) or a continuous signal (the absolute height of the current level) depending on the principle of operation.

How Does a Capacitive Level Sensor Work?

Capacitive level sensors are a universal budget option for detecting boundary (maximum or minimum) level values in various industries. They are based on the physical principle of measuring the capacitance of a capacitor formed by a sensor.

There are different designs of capacitive level switches that allow you to measure the capacitance of electrically conductive and non-conductive liquids (conductive liquids include those whose resistivity is less than 106 Ohm * m). In the case of work with electrically conductive liquids, one of the plate or rod electrodes is insulated, and for non-conductive liquids, both remain uninsulated.

The design of the IFM efector level sensor includes two main elements. This is a capacitive sensor in the form of a rod or cable of a cylindrical or flat shape and a secondary converter. The basis of the device is a sensitive electric capacitor, which clearly records all changes in the dielectric constant of the medium. When in contact with liquid, the capacitance of the capacitor is determined, the value of the liquid level in the tank associated with it, and then the obtained values are converted into an output signal, which is transmitted to external equipment for monitoring.

The whole principle of operation of such level gauges is based on the fact that liquids and the gas space above them have different electrical properties. The sensing elements immersed in the liquid determine the capacitance, and the second plates, remaining "outside", also take measurements, and based on this information, conclusions are drawn about the height of the liquid column.

As for the electrode system, it may vary depending on the model. In most cases, these are metal flat plates or hollow cylinders.

Scope of capacitive liquid level sensors

Capacitive level transmitters provide continuous measurement of the level of liquid media. Devices of this type are suitable for use in various industries, including:

  • Food industry: production of alcohol, sauces, and drinks;
  • Chemical industry: production of varnishes, paints, liquid building materials, and household chemicals;

What is a Float Level Sensor?

Float level sensors are one of the most inexpensive and at the same time reliable devices for monitoring the level of liquids. Float level switches can be used to control the level of a wide variety of media such as sewage, chemically aggressive liquids, or foodstuffs.

The design of the sensors is very simple: the sensor has a float with a magnet inside. When the level of the medium changes, the float moves, and the magnet approaches the reed switch, which leads to a contact closure.

Advantages of float level sensors:

  • Various design options and mounting methods;
  • No need for own food;
  • Easy to install;
  • Low price;
  • Insensitivity to foam;
  • Working with aggressive, bubbly, and viscous liquids.

Float sensors can be connected to a level controller, which, in turn, to an actuator - for example, to a supply or replenishment pump.
