IFM distance sensor arrangements the range to the target. For this destination, a few kinds of facilities with second technologies are used: laser, ultrasonic and photoelectrical.
Range detectors are devices whose output signal is information about the distance to some, in the general case, uncontrolled object.
The most popular technology for distance measurement is laser sensors. IFM Electronic Installs Class 1 lasers in its devices that allows them to be used in the automotive industry.
Manufacturer also produces products with PMD (Photonic Mixer Device) Technology. Such IFM pmd sensors is a universal solution, because they have a large operational range, great background suppression and high excess gain in one package. However, their price is similar to standard sensors.
IFM Distance sensor types
IFM laser distance sensor
Laser (optical) sensor is an electronic device that uses the properties of laser radiation to step intervals. Laser space sensors own big resolution, accuracy and repeatability of measurements. They are economical, easy to configure and do not require significant maintenance costs. The materials used and the high degree of protection allow these devices to be used in difficult operating conditions.
Use:
Laser distance sensors IFM are widely used in automated control systems and are used to detect objects and count them. The relatively simple design ensures reliability and high measurement accuracy. Optical devices are widely spread in security systems, where they are used as effective motion sensors.
IFM ultrasonic distance sensor
This type is used to detect and determine the distance to the object, as well as to control their movement. The transmitter emits sound vibrations whose frequency exceeds 20 kHz. They in the form of waves "stitch" the space, and, meeting with solid objects, reflect from them and fall into the receiver of the sensor.
Application domains:
- Robotics
- Determination of the flow rate of liquids transported through the pipeline
- Measurement of the level of bulk and liquid materials in the tank
- Tracking the physical and chemical characteristics of various substances
- Medicine
- Fire safety
- Security system
IFM Photoelectric transducers
The main benefits of this type are:
- Lofty-grade photoelectric actuators for a variety of applications
- Versions for use in hygienic applications
- LED monitor to check procedure, switching condition and office
- Large band of technique components for lightly and reliable installation
IFM Radar sensor
This devices measures and evaluates the distance, speed and size of objects. Radar sensors are critical to safety
Distance sensors can also be pulsed or continuous.
Operation of distance sensors
Distance sensors most often consist of three elements:
- controller,
- emitter,
- receiver.
The controller with the help of a transmitter sends a signal (acoustic, electromagnetic), and then "waits" until the wave is reflected from the nearest surface and is registered by the receiver. Measurement can be made in two ways. Taking into account the time and speed of wave propagation, the controller calculates the distance traveled by the signal, and then sends this information to the master. Another method is to register the intensity of the reflected light (the weaker the returning wave, the greater the distance the sensor registers). The main division of the sensors occurs precisely according to the type of signal emitted.
Main characteristics of IFM Electronic length actuators:
- Photonic Mixer Device (PMD) technology
- Easy to handle
- Stable operation with all types of surfaces
- Working with variable mounting position
- Wide operating range up to 10 m.
