What are laser sensors?

How does a laser sensor work?

The principle of operation of IFM laser sensor is based on the triangulation method for measuring the distance to an object. The laser beam, which differs from ordinary light in the high parallelism of the beam, emitted from the receiver, falls on the surface.

The basis of the laser sensor is the triangulation principle - measuring the distance to any object using a triangle. The receiver emits a laser beam with a high beam parallelism - it hits the surface and is reflected from it at a certain angle depending on the distance to the object. The surface of the vast majority of objects is rough - it has many tubercles, so the beam is reflected from these irregularities and enters the receiver.

Types and characteristics of laser sensors

The most common variety is phase-type sensors. They are able to estimate not only the distance to the object, but also its shape and size. This makes them especially handy when installing burglar alarms.

When choosing such equipment, it is necessary to pay attention to the following operating parameters:

  1. Measuring range.
  2. Accuracy of measurements.
  3. The output signal format that the microcontroller sends for further response.
  4. Operating temperature range
  5. Dimensions. The security system should be effective, but as inconspicuous as possible.

Where are laser sensors used?

Laser movement and distance sensors are in great demand in automated security systems. Beams can pass in corridors, on the territory, in walk-through areas, doorways and not only.
