The Altistart 01 Soft Starter is the most compact in design and simple to configure among the entire line of Schneider Electric Soft Starters.

Altistart 01 Telemecanique is designed to limit the starting torque, soft start, and brake asynchronous motors. Using the Schneider ATS01 / ATSU01 improves the starting characteristics of asynchronous motors, providing a controlled, shock-free, smooth start. It allows you to eliminate mechanical shocks that cause premature wear, reduce repair costs, and reduce equipment downtime. Altistart 01 limits torque and inrush currents when starting machines that do not require high starting torque.

Telemecanique Soft Starters of this series are designed for the following simple applications:

  • conveyors;
  • belt conveyors;
  • pumps;
  • fans;
  • compressors;
  • automatic doors;
  • small portal cranes;
  • belt mechanisms.

And also the Altistart ATS01 is designed for:

  • Control of one phase of the motor supply (single-phase or three-phase) to limit the starting torque.
  • Internal bypass relay.
  • For single-phase motors up to: 0.37 kW.
  • For three-phase motors up to: 1.1 kW.
  • Motor supply voltage from 110 to 480 V, 50/60 Hz. An external power supply is required to control the starter.
  • A line contactor is always required to start/stop the motor.

ATS 01 models are equipped with:

  • start time setting potentiometer.
  • potentiometer for setting the initial voltage level depending on the motor load torque.
  • two inputs:
    1 24V DC input.
    1 input 240V for power supply of motor control circuits.

How to wire the Schneider Altistart 01?

ATS01 wiring takes place in front of the driven motor. When the start button is pressed on the soft starter, it, with the help of thyristor communicators (semiconductor high-speed valves), begins to generate an output voltage with a modified sinusoid, according to a given program. The speed of rotation of the electric motor is directly proportional to the frequency of the supply voltage, respectively, by controlling the frequency of the supply network, you can control the speed of the asynchronous electric motor.

Due to the fact that when controlling high-power electric motors, power microcircuits in a soft starter have to deal with large currents, this leads to their strong heating and increased equipment wear. Modern soft starters use bypass circuits to solve this problem. Their essence lies in the fact that in parallel with power microcircuits, a conventional contactor is installed in soft starters. When starting and stopping, the soft starter feeds the electric motor through the microcircuit while modulating the output voltage, and when it reaches the nominal speed, it turns off the microcircuits, and power is supplied through the contactor. Thus significantly increasing their resource.

Schneider Altistart 01 setting

There are 3 potentiometers with gradations from A to E, but without calibration in seconds or volts, which can confuse customers.

  1. Start Time: time of linear voltage rise (note: this is not linear acceleration)
  2. Stop Time: linear voltage drop time (no deceleration)

This device is used to reduce the direct starting of the motors to limit voltage spikes that can damage the mechanism. Neither start-up nor braking time is estimated.

Settings for maximum starting torque

If the start time is set to min. (A) and the initial voltage is max. (E), the starter performs a direct start with unwanted torque jumps that can damage the mechanism.

Settings for the smoothest starting torque

If the start time is set to max. (E) and the initial voltage is at min. (A), the starter generates a very long linear voltage jump with a gradual increase in torque, which eliminates mechanical shocks.

However, if the program requires a high starting torque, the starting device slowly generates sufficient torque, which leads to overheating of the engine and shutting down due to heat load.

Installation method

Set both potentiometers to C and run. There are two possible scenarios: The program starts correctly; you can still increase the start-up time and reduce the initial voltage if necessary, although not very much because in this case there is a risk that the engine will not start.

The program does not start; increases the initial voltage and reduces the start-up time. If the Start Time potentiometer is set to the minimum level A and the initial voltage potentiometer is set to the maximum level E, increase the drive rating.
