The Schneider Altistart 48 Soft Starter and stop device is a thyristor switching device (voltage regulator) that provides smooth start and stop of three-phase asynchronous motors with a squirrel-cage rotor from a 4 to 1200 kW.

It combines the functions of soft starting and braking, protection of mechanisms and motors, as well as communication with automation systems. These functions meet the most frequent applications, mainly in the construction, food, and chemical industries for centrifugal mechanisms, pumps, fans, compressors, and conveyors. The characteristics of the control algorithm of the Altistart 48 soft starters provide high reliability, safety, and ease of commissioning.

Schneider ATS48 is an economical solution that allows you to:

• reduce the cost of operating mechanisms by reducing mechanical impacts and improving the operational readiness of equipment;
• reduce the impact of starting motors on the electrical network by limiting current surges and voltage dips in the network.

The Altistart 48 device family includes two product ranges for three-phase mains voltage:

1. 230 - 415 V, 50/60 Hz;
2. 208 - 690 V, 50/60 Hz.

Both ranges of ATS 48 starting devices are divided into standard sizes depending on the operating mode - normal or heavy.

In normal operation the Telemecanique Altistart 48 is designed to:

• start with 4 In for 23 s or 3 In for 46 s from a cold state of the motor (corresponding to the rated duty S1);
• starting with 3 In for 23 s or with 4 In for 12 s with duty cycle DU = 50% and 10 starts per hour or an equivalent thermal cycle (corresponds to S4 rated duty).

Motor thermal protection must be assigned to class 10.

In heavy-duty applications softstarters are designed for:

• starting with 4 In for 48silis3In for 90 s from a cold state of the motor (corresponding to the rated duty S1);
• starting with 4 In for 25 s at a duty cycle of 50% duty cycle and 5 starts per hour or a thermally equivalent cycle diagram (corresponds to-rated duty S4).

Motor thermal protection must be assigned to class 20.

Soft Starter Altistart 48 operation

Schneider ATV48 is supplied and ready to use for normal use with motor protection class 10. It has a built-in terminal allowing programmable functions, settings, and protections to be reconfigured to adapt and personalize the application to the needs of the customer.

Electric drive functions:

• a special torque control algorithm implemented in Altistart 48 soft starters (Schneider Electric patent);
• maintenance of the moment developed by the engine during acceleration and deceleration (significant reduction of shock loads);
• ease of setting acceleration during acceleration and starting torque;
• the possibility of shorting the device using a bypass contactor at the end of the start-up with the maintenance of electronic protection ("bypass" function);
• the large allowable range of frequency change when powered by electrical units;
• the possibility of connecting the starting device to the motor with a delta connection of the windings, in series with each winding.

Motor and mechanism protection functions:

• built-in indirect thermal motor protection;
• the processing of information from thermistors (posistors);
• start-time control;
• engine preheating;
• underload and overload protection in a steady state.

Functions that facilitate integration into automation systems:

• 4 digital inputs, 2 digital outputs, 3 relay outputs, and 1 analog output;
• removable terminal blocks of input and output control circuits;
• second engine configuration function, easy to adapt settings;
• display of electrical parameters, load status, and operating time;
• RS 485 serial port for connection to the Modbus bus.
