A frequency converter is an energy conversion device. The frequency converter converts an alternating current with a fixed frequency and a fixed voltage into variable frequency and variable voltage energy used to control the speed of rotation of induction motors.

Today we will discuss the Telemecanique Altivar 31 range of frequency converters.

Altivar 31 Variable Frequency Drive

Schneider Altivar 31 frequency converters are designed for electric motors with power from 0.18 to 15 kW with two types of mains supply: single-phase (200-240 V) and three-phase (380-500 V). Features of Altivar 31C frequency converters include a built-in terminal with display, menu scroll keys, RUN/STOP keys for local control, Modbus, and CANopen communication protocols built-in.

Features and benefits of ATV 31

Let's take a look at the main features and benefits of the Schneider Electric Altivar 31:

  • Variable speed drive communicates via Modbus and CANopen industrial buses. These two different protocols are built into the drive in the basic version.
  • The transmitter is also equipped with a heatsink for normal environments and ventilated enclosures.
  • Several converters can be installed side by side to save space and can also be easily configured.
  • It has 6 logic inputs, 3 analog inputs, 1 logic/analog output, and 2 relay outputs.
  • There are several options that can be used with the Altivar 31 such as braking resistors, line chokes, EMC input, and output filters, circuit boards, an upgrade kit, and an adapter board to replace the Altivar 28.
  • High levels of torque at low speeds thanks to sensorless vector control.
  • Fully enclosed drive with protection class IP55.
  • Built-in Telemecanique Vario switch-disconnector, speed reference potentiometer and Run/Stop switch.
  • Operation up to +50 °C without derating.

ATV 31 Applications

The Altivar 31 frequency converter includes features suitable for the most common applications:

  • Material handling such as small conveyors and lifts.
  • Packaging and packaging machines.
  • Specialized machines such as mixers, kneaders, and textile machines.
  • Pumps, compressor machines, and fans.

Basic functions of the drive Altivar 31

And now let's move on to the main functions that the ATV 31 performs:

  • Motor and drive protection.
  • Speed up and down as well as 16 preset speeds.
  • Built-in PID controller.
  • Two and three wire control circuits.
  • Brake chopper.
  • Pick-up-on-the-fly function with convenient speed detection and automatic restart.
  • Information about failures and shutdowns of the ATV31, as well as saving the configuration in the archive.
  • Several functions can be assigned to one logic input.
  • The 10 VDC power supply and analog input of the Altivar 31 can be operated with any potentiometer between 1 kΩ and 10 kΩ.
