Sick linear encoders allow getting the absolute position of an object without direct contact. A series of linear measuring systems read linear movements. In their performing process, they also use digital technology.

Linear encoders consist of a read head (magnetic tape) and a reference linear scale (measuring element). The principle of non-contact operation means that the position is determined without mechanical wear. The encoder uses a unique pattern to record absolute position information along the reference scale and sends this information directly to the electronic interface. As a result, there is no need for a zero point. Compact systems with high resolution or robust solutions with very high measuring lengths (the distance is up to 1700 m) can be used in a wide range of applications.
