At modern industrial enterprises, the introduction of various process control automation systems is primarily aimed at solving issues related to reducing the need for operator intervention in the operation of production lines and equipment. Much attention is paid to the accuracy and speed of operation of all elements of the system. In this regard, today great demands are placed on instruments and devices used in automated systems, including in the processes of measuring and controlling the level of water, liquid substances, bulk and other materials.

Siemens Level Transmitters include a large group of level gauges that convert the received value of the measured level into an output control signal using an electronic unit. Depending on the functionality, level sensors can be used as level detectors with a discrete output or as level gauges with a digital or analog output. They are used to control the set level values and signal their achievement, allow continuous level measurement with the transfer of the collected information even at remote distances from the installation site.

What are level sensors?

Siemens Level Sensors are devices that allow you to track the amount of a liquid or bulk substance by the level of its surface in a certain container. They can produce a discrete (on reaching a certain level) or a continuous signal (the absolute height of the current level) depending on the principle of operation.

The principle of operation of such a sensor is based on the Archimedean force of any liquid. When the sensor is placed in a container with liquid, the float interacts with the surface. Due to the Archimedean force, the float is pushed outward and is in the same position as the level.

It is also based on measuring the propagation time of an electromagnetic wave (radio wave) of an ultrahigh frequency from the level gauge antenna to the liquid surface and back. Radars are suitable for use in humid, foggy and dusty environments, as well as variable temperatures.

Types of Siemens Level Transmitters

The following types of Siemens level sensors are most often used:

  • Capacitive level sensors. Measure the level of the product by changing the capacitance of the built-in capacitor when the level changes.
  • Conductometric level sensors. They control the product level on the basis of measuring the resistance of the circuit formed between the control medium and the electromagnetic relay and electrode included in the sensor.
  • Hydrostatic sensors. Designed to control the level of liquid and gaseous products, they are able to perform continuous measurements, as well as signal limit values.
  • Vibration alarms. They are used to control the limit values of the level of bulk solids or liquid products.
  • Ultrasonic and acoustic level gauges. They are successfully used to control both liquid and bulk products and can be used both as level switches and as level gauges for continuous monitoring.
  • Optical level indicators. They work on the principle of photocells and are designed to monitor limit values.
  • Radioisotope sensors. They work on the basis of the radiation of Gamma rays passing through the controlled product and entering the Geiger counter.
  • Microwave radar (radio wave) level gauges. They are the most high tech. The measurement and control of the level takes place with the help of microwave electromagnetic radiation emanating from the sensor.
