Process Instrumentation is a collective term for sensors embedded in measuring instruments used to indicate, measure, and record physical quantities. As the backbone of process control, instruments continue to improve in performance, repeatability, accuracy, reliability and cost.
What is Process instrumentation?
A measuring device is a measuring instrument designed to obtain the values of a measured physical quantity in a specified range. Often, a measuring device is a measuring instrument for generating a signal of measuring information in a form accessible to the direct perception of the operator.
Why do you need Control Measuring Instruments?
Сontrol and measuring devices are necessary for measuring physical, technological or chemical indicators. The main principle of operation of such devices is analysis due to sensors, mechanisms and display of operating parameters on the screen and it is based on the analysis of the converted data obtained as a result of measuring the parameters of the work of the processes under study. There are also mechanical measuring instruments that are much simpler in design.
Types of instrumentation
- Ammeters. A device for measuring current in amperes. The scale of ammeters is graduated in microamperes, milliamps, amperes or kiloamperes in accordance with the measurement limits of the device. The ammeter is connected to the electric circuit in series with the section of the electric circuit in which the current is measured.
- Voltmeters. A direct reading electrical measuring instrument for determining voltage or EMF in electrical circuits. Connected in parallel with the load or power source.
- Ohmmeters. Measuring instrument of direct reading for determination of electrical active resistances. Usually the measurement is made with direct current.
- Hour counters. Devices that record the operating time of the engines of various machines or mechanisms to control and account for the development of a resource.
- Frequency meters. A radio measuring device for determining the frequency of a periodic process or the frequencies of the harmonic components of the signal spectrum.
- Pressure Sensors. A device whose physical parameters change depending on the pressure of the medium being measured. In sensors, the pressure of the measured medium is converted into a unified pneumatic, electrical digital code or signals.
Classification of Siemens process instrumentation equipment
According to the type of measured values, process instrumentation can be divided into several types:
- Thermometers and thermocouples. They are designed to measure various temperature indicators;
- Pressure gauges. Designed to measure pressure;
- Level gauges. Are intended for measurement of various levels, depths and degree of fullness of various capacities;
- Flowmeters. Designed for measuring the flow of various liquids and gases.
Demand for instrumentation remains consistently high. Since many industrial processes depend on the accuracy of the measurement results.
The quality and capabilities of modern control and measuring instruments are such that they are able not only to record various indicators with extreme accuracy, but also to automatically transmit data to the process control point.
