Automatic control of electrical equipment is used in industry, everyday life, car design. To implement the task, various technical means are used. Often, limit switches act as a switching device. Products are responsible for switching on and off, including those related to the protection of mechanisms and people interacting with them.

What is a limit switch?

A limit switch is an electromechanical product that opens and closes the working circuit under certain conditions, for example, at a given position of the controlled device.

The limit switch performs almost the same functions as a simple switch, only it does not require pressing a button to operate it.

Limit switch design

The design of the limit switch is based on the contact part, which includes normally open and normally closed contacts. The moving part, which is absent in non-contact models, is responsible for the impact on the contact group. Internal details of the device are enclosed in the strong case. For its manufacture, both dielectrics and conductive materials are used. As a rule, metal alloys and special plastics are used for this purpose. Power and operation indicators can also be design elements. The limit switch device varies depending on their type.

Types of limit switches

•    Contactless limit switches
This is an improved version of the mechanical progenitors. There are no moving parts in the design, but there is a sensitive element and a signal analyzer. It is based on a special transistor key. Since there is no friction and movement of parts, the reliability of the devices is high.
Inductive switches respond to the approach and distance of an object. The inductor included in the design interacts with the material that changes its magnetic field, and the sensor is activated.

•    Capacitive limit switches
React to certain objects that conduct current or have dielectric properties. The closer the object is to the device, the higher the capacitance of the capacitor and the greater the amplitude of the oscillations generated by the generator. As soon as the indicators reach the set value, the switch is activated. Compared to inductive models, capacitive ones are less sensitive to external influences. They do not respond to air humidity and density changes.

•    Quartz emitters of ultrasonic limit switches
Create impulse waves that change when objects move within the range of the limit switches. Having fixed the changes, the device sends a signal to the equipment.

•    Magnetic Models
Equipped with ferromagnetic contacts that change their position under the influence of a constant magnetic field. The internal parts of the reed switches are placed in a glass or plastic case. Due to the simplicity of the device, magnetic switches are compact in size.

•    Optical limit switches
The operation is based on the interruption of the light beam by objects that enter the area of effect. In addition, the devices are capable of responding to reflected light. Optical models have a large range - up to 150 meters.

Scope of limit switches

Limit switches are actively used in everyday life and industry. The small size of the microswitches allows them to be used in household appliances and electronics. Based on non-contact models, level sensors are created. They react to the filling of containers with liquids and bulk products, stopping their supply.

According to the function performed, the limit switches are divided into protective and functional ones.

  • Protective devices protect controlled equipment from damage and also ensure the safety of people using it.
  • Functional limit switches are responsible for regularly turning the equipment on and off.
