IFM Efector encoders are the special sensors for linear and angular displacement measurement.
IFM Encoders: What is it?
IFM encoders are converters that receive movements as a digital code at the output, or, depending on the solution, in the form of pulses. Today we will talk about two varieties of IFM sensor distributors encoders, such as incremental encoders and absolute encoders.
What is the IFM Incremental Encoder?
Incremental encoders provide position information relative to the position at the previous point in time. After the power is turned on, all information about previous movements disappears and the position of the shaft becomes undefined. As a rule, in this case, the mechanism has to be moved to some known position in order for the position information to become relevant again.
The question of which encoders are preferable to use in a particular system is inextricably linked with the requirements for it. If immediately after powering up the system, the sensor must give the correct position, then it is better to use an absolute encoder. And if, after the start, a period of preparing the system for operation is allowed, when it is possible to bring the machine to the zero position, then an incremental encoder can be used.
Incremental encoders have a simpler design, so among them, you can find models of very compact dimensions, unattainable for absolute encoders. This determines the use of incremental encoders in small systems.
If the encoder is used only to determine the speed of rotation of the mechanism, then an incremental encoder is sufficient to perform this function.
IFM incremental encoders are one of the most common sensors in modern complex technical systems. Here are just a few examples:
- Medical equipment.
- Automated test and diagnostic equipment.
- Self-propelled robotic devices.
- Access control systems.
The main IFM Incremental encoder Types:
- Incremental encoders without display have solid or hollow shaft variations. Such devices have resolution from 2 to 10000 ppr (pulses per revolution) and two output channels (A and B) with quadrature signals. Encoder cables connect to the main angle sensor in axial or radial way. Information about displacement transmits into controllers.
- Incremental encoders with display are equal to the previous series but have rotatable display (2-colored). Devices communication is carried out via IO-Link.
- Incremental encoders for wet environments due to its stainless steel housing have excellent resistance to ingress of water or other liquid material into its internal mechanisms. Its good protection level ensures long service life in harsh environments
What is the IFM Absolute Encoder?
An absolute encoder is an angular position sensor that provides position information in the form of a multi-digit digital code. Each code is unique within the range of measured angular positions. This allows absolute encoders to provide real position information immediately after power-up, without having to go to the home position and search for the zero (index) mark, as is the case with incremental encoders.
Products are widely used in modern complex technical systems. Here are just a few examples:
- Robotics.
- Machine tools and machining centers.
- Prostheses and exoskeletons.
- Two-coordinate guidance devices for optical and telecommunication equipment.
- Automated test and measurement systems.
Absolute encoders differ in the maximum angle of rotation at which all codes generated by the encoder do not coincide with each other. On this basis, they are divided into single-turn and multi-turn.
- For single-turn encoders, after one full revolution of the shaft, the generated codes begin to repeat - that is, information about the position of the shaft is unambiguous only within one revolution.
- For multi-turn, the issued code begins to repeat when more than one revolution is made. The code they give out uniquely corresponds to the position when moving more than one revolution - up to the maximum number of revolutions that the encoder can count.
Technology overview - IFM encoders
IFM encoders are available in absolute and incremental execution. In the absolute version, IFM encoders output a specific code that corresponds to the position of the shaft. Single turn encoders determine the position - each angle is from 0 to 360 degrees. In turn, multi-turn ones determine the revolution in the range from 0 to 4096 revolutions.
Incremental encoders at the output determine a sequence of pulses with a frequency corresponding to the speed of rotation of the rotating shaft.
Main characteristics of IFM encoders:
- For absolute encoders, the resolution is up to 8916 steps/rev.
- For incremental encoders resolution from 5 to 12000 steps/rev.
- For a multi-turn absolute encoder, the resolution is up to 8192(4096) steps.
- Data transfer according to standards: SSI, AS-i, PROFIBUS, CAN, DeviceNet, InterBus.
