Industrial vision is the application of computer vision to industrial production and research. It consists in detecting an object or one of its characteristics by computer processing of digital images. An object is placed under a certain light, which contributes to the detection of the target part, then images are captured thanks to one or more cameras. The images are then digitized for use by image processing software, which is most often designed for control.

Once the image processing is complete, a decision can be made based on predetermined criteria and action can be taken. For example, noticing the absence of a cap on a pen, the latter is dropped from the circuit and subjected to a different action than pens with a cap. For such purposes, Baumer industrial cameras are used, which we will discuss in more detail in this material.

What is an Industrial Camera?

Industrial cameras are the ideal solution for quickly seeing what's happening on your machines at any given moment. They offer you the ability to easily capture images of an object or location for viewing by a range of imaging applications in manufacturing or industrial automation. Cameras consisting of imaging components interacting with lenses also include sensors designed to display the light focused by the lenses.

Such cameras can be used in production control applications, production process automation, object flow control such as microscopy, or in predictive monitoring, for which it will prove particularly useful, to prevent replacement or during possible failure, thus avoiding frequent manual inspections.

The advantages you get with Baumer industrial cameras:

  • Highly accurate measurement results without thermal effects on the lens or image properties.
  • Efficient heat dissipation near the sensor and lens.
  • Flexible integration in limited environmental conditions.
  • Cooling hose for liquids or compressed air integrated directly into housing.
  • Easy and economical integration.
  • No additional cooling components are required.
  • Accurate image analysis with long-term stability.
  • Industrial design with a temperature range of up to 65 °C on the housing.
  • Optically decoupled inputs and outputs with voltage levels of automation technology.
  • Recording of image sequences with camera settings that change from frame to frame at maximum sensor speed.
  • Standard sequencer.
  • Continuous shooting mode and built-in image storage.

The Technology of Baumer Industrial Cameras

With decisive advances in higher speeds and lower noise, CMOS sensors have firmly established themselves with their pioneering sensor technology, replacing CCD sensors in many industrial imaging applications. Along with high resolution, frame rate, and low power consumption, today's CMOS sensors also offer excellent value for money.

How Do I Choose an Industrial Camera?

You need to choose an industrial video camera depending on what you want to use it for, there are several important factors to consider when choosing an industrial camera.

First of all, you need to make sure that the camera you choose is well suited for the application for which it is intended because depending on its use, the performance of one camera will not be the same. When choosing, you also have to consider the range of inspection and emission zones, namely whether your camera should have infrared vision, ultraviolet, multispectral, etc. In addition, you will also have to choose between different types of images. sensors (CCD sensor, CMOS sensor, microbolometer, and FPA sensor). Finally, you will have to choose a communication interface tailored to your needs: USB 2.0, USB 3.0, GigE, Camera Link, PoE, and VGA.

The choice of each of these features depends on both your application and your budget. Here is a list of important things to consider:

  • Scope of application.
  • The spectrum of inspection.
  • Image sensor.
  • Communication interface.
  • The most suitable radiation.
  • The spectrum of camera inspection.
  • Camera integration in an industrial environment.
  • Communication interface.
  • Types of image sensors: CCD, CMOS, FPA, microbolometer.

Currently, there are 2D, 3D, thermal imaging, and X-ray industrial vision cameras on the market. Depending on the type of your goals, you can choose one of these.

Applications of Baumer Industrial Cameras

Baumer cameras are equipped with a built-in cooling hose to ensure highly accurate image capture even in hot conditions. The effective heat dissipation near the sensor and lens compensates for pixel thermal drift and produces images with very low noise, few defective pixels, and a wide dynamic range. These industrial cameras are the ideal solution for applications such as semiconductor manufacturing (wafer, wafer junction, and so on), the glass industry, and metal processing.

Due to their design, these cameras can be used directly in applications without additional cooling components, which saves time and costs in system integration.

Here are the main applications for industrial cameras from Baumer:

  • Semiconductor manufacturing: Measuring wafers: Joining wafers in the production process.
  • Glass industry: Control of production processes.
  • Metal processing: Inspection of metal parts after the forming process.
  • External cooling with an integrated cooling hose.
  • Efficient heat dissipation is exactly where the heat is released: near the sensor and lens.
