Absolute linear potentiometer without internal rod.

Absolute potentiometer encoder is an adjustable device that is capable to share an electrical voltage. It is in fact a changeable resistor. The working principle is based on computing the change in resistance created by the shift of the subject within an electrical circuit. The potentiometers are composed of a lead wire or metallic layer wrapped in an isolation media and a sliding contact that slides across the conductor.
