How Do Siemens Flow Meters Work?

A flow meter is a special device for measuring the flow of liquid, gas, and steam in industrial systems. Consumption is an important indicator in the course of many industrial and technological processes. Today we will look at the types of Siemens flow meters. The company produces four types of flow meters, also it can be different Siemens flow meter sizing, namely:
  1. electromagnetic;
  2. ultrasonic;
  3. vortex;
  4. Coriolis.
Let's look at what is the principle of operation of each of these flowmeters.

Siemens Electromagnetic flow meters

An electromagnetic Siemens flow meter is a measuring instrument based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. According to the principle of electromagnetic induction, when an electrical conductor moves through a magnetic field at a right angle (90°) to the field, a voltage is induced in the conductor. For voltage induction, three factors are necessary: a conductor, a magnetic field, and the movement of the conductor relative to the magnetic field. The greater the relative displacement, the higher the resulting voltage.
The electromagnetic Siemens rotameter consists of a tube with a set of solenoids attached to the outer surface of the tube. Solenoids are used to create the magnetic field needed to produce voltage. As a medium capable of conducting an electric current move through an electromagnetic flow meter, it passes through a magnetic field and a voltage is energized in the medium. An electrically conductive medium is the conductor that is necessary to obtain voltage.

Advantages of electromagnetic flow meters:
  • Moderate cost.
  • There are no moving and fixed parts in the cross-section.
  • Large dynamic measurement range.

Siemens Ultrasonic flow meters


An ultrasonic flow meter is a standard flow meter, the basis of which is the measurement of the flow velocity, and the determination of the flow rate of the moving medium in it is carried out using acoustic laws. Such flow meters can be used to measure the flow rate of non-conductive media.

Sound is produced by vibrations that travel in the form of waves. In order for sound to appear, several points must be taken into account: a source that sends sound waves, air or liquid medium in which sound waves can propagate, and an object that receives or captures sound waves.

If an ultrasonic flow meter is operating, then the source, vibrating, sends ultrasonic waves with a certain known frequency. Sound waves propagate, move in the flow of the medium until they encounter air bubbles or solid particles in the flow of the moving medium. When sound waves hit air bubbles or solid particles, they are repelled or reflected from the bubble or particle and travel back towards the receiving device or receiver.

Advantages of ultrasonic flow meters:

  • There are no moving and fixed parts in the cross-section.
  • The average dynamic range of measurements.
  • Possibility of mounting on pipelines of large diameter.

Siemens Vortex flow meters


Vortex meters measure the frequency of oscillations that occur in a liquid or gas stream as it flows around obstacles. When flowing around obstacles, a vortex is formed, from which the devices get their name.

Vortex flow meters are designed to measure the volumetric and mass flow rates of liquids, gasses, and steam. The flowmeters consist of an electronics unit and a primary transducer. The block is made in the form of a cylindrical body with compartments for a viewing window and connectors. Cable glands and an adapter for the transducer are located on the housing. Flowmeters are used to measure and record the consumption of substances in technological processes in industry and public utilities.

  • Insensitivity to pollution.

Coriolis flow meters

The principle of operation of Coriolis flowmeters is based on the basic physical phenomenon of the appearance of acceleration when the medium moves in a vibrating tube. As a result, forces arise that twist the tube, since in the inlet half of the tube the force acting from the medium prevents its displacement, and in the outlet half it contributes. This leads to the appearance of a phase difference in the oscillations of the inlet and outlet pipes of the sensor. This principle is called the Coriolis effect.

Advantages of Coriolis flow meters:
  • Direct measurement of mass flow.
  • Precipitation does not affect measurements.
  • There are no obstructions in the inner section.
