Schneider Electric Soft Starter is an electrical device for starting and accelerating the motor and matching the starting torque on the shaft with the load. The soft starter circuit is built on the basis of power thyristors or triacs. The device is a transformerless stepless voltage converter.

Soft starters are used:

  • For inclusion of powerful asynchronous electric motors in a network of low power.
  • For smooth start, acceleration, and stop of electric machines.
  • When if it is necessary to start the engine under load.
  • To reduce starting currents.


Soft starters make it possible to abandon expensive and imperfect schemes for starting electric motors, as well as significantly expand the scope of inexpensive and functional asynchronous machines with a squirrel-cage rotor. They are used in the drive of technological equipment:
Easy start. Starting currents under such conditions do not exceed three times the rated value.

Heavy start. When starting the electric motor, the current increases by 4-5 times and transient processes in the circuits last more than 30 seconds.
Particularly difficult start. In this case, the starting current exceeds the rated current by 7-10 times. The transition process takes a significant amount of time.

Soft starters have a relatively low cost, small size, and weight in comparison with frequency converters.

Schneider Altistart operating principle

The power part of the Schneider electric altistart consists of power thyristors connected in anti-parallel and bypass contactors. The change in voltage is achieved by adjusting the conductivity of semiconductor devices by applying trigger pulses to the control contacts.

Soft starters also include:

  1. Control pulse generator. This block generates signals that change the conduction angle of semiconductor devices when starting and stopping the motor.
  2. A control device based on a controller or microprocessor. Its main functions are giving commands to the pulse generator, providing communication with other devices, receiving signals from sensors, and providing protective shutdown of the electric machine in emergency and abnormal operating modes.


The start of the electric machine is carried out at a voltage of 30-60% of the nominal voltage. In this case, there is a smooth engagement of the gears of the transmission mechanism, and a gradual tension of the drive belts. Further, the control unit gradually increases the conductivity of the thyristors until the electric motor is fully accelerated. When the nominal shaft speed is reached, the contacts of the shunt switching devices are closed. The current begins to flow around the thyristors. This is necessary to reduce the heating of semiconductor devices, increase the service life of the soft starter, and reduce power consumption.

When the motor stops, the contactor turns on the thyristors in the circuit. From the pulse generator, signals are received that smoothly reduce the conductivity of the thyristors until the electric machine stops.

Alti start main and additional functions

Telemecanique soft starter is a multifunctional electrical device. Its main purpose is to reduce starting currents and mitigate dynamic shocks when starting the engine.

In addition, soft starters provide:

  • Start with rated torque. In this case, at the start, the maximum voltage is applied to the electric motor, after which the thyristors are turned on. Acceleration to the nominal frequency is carried out smoothly. Soft starters of this design are used for mechanisms with a significant starting load.
  • Dynamic braking. Soft starters with this function ensure that the drive stops without coasting. They are installed in the drive of inertial technological equipment: traction fans, elevators, etc.
  • Start as a function of current and voltage. Soft starters of this design allow you to set the starting current limit. The devices are used at low network power, as well as in the drive of equipment with low starting torque.
  • Motor protection. Soft starters provide drive stops in case of phase failure, overloads, acceleration time exceeding, as well as in case of other anomalous and emergency modes. Soft starters do not have short circuit protection and are switched on through fuses or circuit breakers.
  • Integration into ACS and telemechanics systems. Soft starters with processor control units and devices for supporting communication protocols with remote control equipment are easily integrated into multilevel systems for automating technical processes.
  • Shaft speed control. Soft starters with this function do not replace frequency converters. This mode is acceptable for a short equipment setup.


The choice of soft starter functionality depends on the requirements for the electric drive and is carried out on the basis of technical and economic feasibility.

With a smooth start of an asynchronous motor, it is possible to reduce the disadvantages of such electrical machines and provide:

  • Reduced repair costs. Starting currents cause overheating of the winding, which significantly reduces the operational life of the machines.
  • No jerks. A sharp start of the engine leads to an increase in wear of gear transmission mechanisms, water hammer in the fluid supply network, and other undesirable consequences.
  • Reducing electricity consumption. Direct start causes additional energy consumption. In addition, voltage drops in conditions of limited network power adversely affect all connected devices.
  • Reducing the cost of switching equipment. Electrical devices for asynchronous drives are chosen with a large margin of power. Soft start allows you to connect cheaper switching and protection devices.


Smooth start and acceleration significantly expand the scope of asynchronous electric motors.

Altivar Soft Starter

A soft starter for an asynchronous motor allows limiting the slew rate and the maximum achievable value of the starting current for a certain time in the range from zero to the required nominal value. This is achieved by smoothly increasing the voltage on the motor windings. The soft starter provides the ability to keep the current and voltage parameters within normal limits, which significantly reduces the likelihood of overheating of the windings and prevents the occurrence of jerks in the mechanical part of the drive.

The Altivar range includes three types of soft starters:

  1. Altistart 01.
  2. Altistart 22.
  3. Altistart 48.

Altistart 01

Altistart 01 are soft starters for simple machines from 0.37 to 15kW, designed to limit starting torque, soft start, and stop induction motors.

The use of the ATS01 improves the starting characteristics of induction motors, providing a controlled, shock-free, soft start. They allow eliminating mechanical shocks that cause premature wear, reduce repair costs, and reduce equipment downtime.

Altistart 01 limits torque and inrush currents when starting machines that do not require high starting torque.

Soft starters are designed for the following simple applications:

  • Pumps;
  • Fans;
  • Automatic doors;

Altistart 22

Altistart 22 is designed for smooth starting and braking of three-phase asynchronous electric motors with a squirrel-cage rotor from 4 to 315 kW.

The device has a built-in bypass contactor. This allows the Altistart 22 to be used for applications that require a bypass contactor at the end of the starting process, for example, to reduce heat dissipation from the starter itself.

Control functions:

  • Correction of the current of the Altistart 22 soft starter and brake according to the rated motor current.
  • Current limit.
  • Stop type selection (freewheel or ramp).

Drive control functions:

  • Three-phase power control.
  • Possibility of connecting the device to the motor windings connected by a triangle. This allows the use of a smaller soft start and brake device.
  • Control of the electric motor according to the linear law of voltage or torque change throughout the entire period of acceleration and deceleration (significant reduction of shock loads).
  • Automatic control of the built-in bypass contactor at the end of the start, while maintaining the protections implemented in the control unit.

Altistart 48

The Altistart 48 soft start and stop device is a thyristor switching device (voltage regulator) that provides soft start and stop of three-phase asynchronous motors with a squirrel-cage rotor up to 630 kW.

The ATS48 combines the functions of soft start and stop, protection of mechanisms and motors, as well as communication with automation systems. These functions meet the most frequent applications, mainly in the construction, food, and chemical industries for centrifugal mechanisms, pumps, fans, compressors, and conveyors. The characteristics of the control algorithm of the Altistart 48 soft starters provide high reliability, safety, and ease of commissioning.

Electric drive functions:

  • The special torque control algorithm.
  • Maintenance of the moment developed by the engine during acceleration and deceleration (significant reduction of shock loads).
